Genetic test for Gluten intolerance Coeliac disease and gluten allergy test

How many times has tucking into that weekend pizza treat left you with an uncomfortably close relationship with the bathroom? Or that family night pasta bake sent you to bed early with exhaustion?

This could be an indicator that you’re reacting negatively to gluten.

Other signs could include:

  • Anaemia (low red blood cell count)
  • Bone pain
  • Brain fog
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Delayed Growth in Children
  • Depression and Anxiety
  • Digestive issues (diarrhoea, constipation, feeling bloated, tummy pain, flatulence)
  • Fatigue
  • Skin problems (dermatitis herpetiformis, eczema, or a rash)
  • Headaches
  • Issues with fertility
  • Irritability
  • Joint pain
  • Migraines
  • Mouth ulcers
  • Muscle pain
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Tingling, specifically in your hands and feet
  • Unexplained weight loss

If you’re experiencing one or more of these issues and you have gluten in your diet, it might be time to test and see what’s going on.

What is gluten?

In its most basic form, gluten is a naturally occurring protein. It can be commonly found in various grains like wheat, rye, spelt, and barley.

Beyond its natural occurrence, gluten often serves as an additive in numerous food products, contributing to protein content, enhancing texture, and providing flavour. Additionally, it acts as a binding agent in various culinary applications.

As a result, gluten can be commonly encountered in dietary staples like bread and pasta.

Why can it be a problem?

As we can see from the list of symptoms, when gluten doesn’t agree with your body, the results can be painful. You are likely experiencing one of two medical issues: a gluten allergy or coeliac disease. There are other potential issues, but these are the top two to rule out.

Coeliac disease stands as an autoimmune disorder that emerges when gluten is ingested. In this condition, the immune system erroneously targets the small intestine, resulting in inflammation and harm to the inner lining. This damage hinders the body’s ability to absorb essential nutrients, which can lead to lasting complications.

On the other hand, gluten allergy, often referred to as non-coeliac gluten sensitivity, presents symptoms that may mimic those of coeliac disease. However, the crucial distinction lies in the absence of self-directed immune attacks in gluten allergy. Nevertheless, dealing with this condition can still be challenging.

What are my next steps?

If you are feeling any of the symptoms described above, it’s essential to recognise that these are not normal and they will be affecting your quality of life. The good news is if you are experiencing a gluten allergy or coeliac disease, there is hope.

The best next step is to take an allergy test to determine the cause of your symptoms. With a clear understanding of why you feel the way you do, you can start to take control of your health and live a more comfortable lifestyle.
